My tank is navigator a bit of a problem... everyone I do a water change I leave behind this whit residue in the water... which then turns my driftwood white and stays like this for a few days... tank is 4'x3'x3' housing my motoro rays and arowana ... my main question is...without buying R.O. water what should I do? My levels all test perfect but no matter what I do or use.. I continuously have this white almost chalky substance in my tank and water itself.... I can't even have any lights stronger then florescent or my tank has a white glow.... I run a Sump with a mag 12 and a fluval 405 with sponges and peat and carbon... guys and girls please help me...

ya i am and i am only doing like a max of 30% at a time... and i use de-chlor.... or aquanova...

The water for the changes, are you treating it and then letting it sit a while? (I only use Seachem or Kent water products.) What kind of container are you using for the new water? I always line my buckets with new white trash bags, making sure they are not treated with any deodorizer or stuff like that. Then fill with fresh water and put in the water treatment, then put in an air line with an air stone for about 30 minutes or so, then put it into the aquarium. For each bucketfull, I use a new trash bag. (Because I don't know if there would be residue on the last bag, from the de-chlorinator chemicals.) Was also wondering why the 30% water change? They always say to just change 15 to 25% of the water. To me, it sounds like too much water is being changed at a time, imao. Maybe the wter isn't having enough time to settle into a full 'cycle'? How often do you do all the tests for water conditions?

well i have a rather large bioload and like to go a little bigger... raising motoros and the eat like pigs... and my arowana is a bit of a beast when it comes to food... i currently use a 55 gallon drum... and treat in there with a powerhead at all times... i really wish i could figure this problem out.. i have racked my brain many a times... and this happens everytime... its stupid... and a rather small problem none the less it still is agrivating...

Is the 55 drum a trash can?? like the big grey ones if so, make sure its food safe if not it will leech things. Like for my 20gal i use the 5 gal water cooler jugs.

No it has never been used... my tank will not grow algae for some reason too... there may be a link between the two... not sure just yet... but my tank seriously has a white cloud hovering in it... its bad... please help with any ideas...

How long has your tank been up and running? Do you have an air leak on your return pump? Micro bubbles are small enough that it will cause the water to look milky.

What size sump? You may be lacking a little bio media too giving it alight white haze.

Just some ideas, hope it helps
