I was fishing in a canal where there are many gar that can be seen swimming along the surface. I put on a zara spook and casted out. BOOM! Huge 3 ft gar hits my lure. Fought it for a few minutes and got it on near shore. By now it was thrashing around and jumping and just cut right through my line. Crap...
Well just wanted to share that and I also caught 8 other fish, LMB ranging from 3 to 7 lbs. on the zara spook.

its not easy to get them on plugs but the hard bodied lures make their teeth slide off right on to the hooks so its not that difficult, ive only caught them on live before. if you manage to get one to shore again, keep it in the water for as long as possible. if you hold their head out of water, you greatly increase the chances of breaking the line or ripping the hooks out. good luck

3 footer eh?
you had a state record on
:grinno:
did you get 7lbs with a scale or was this the same measuring scale as the gar?
:D
next time bring a cam and stronger line!
also its a good idea to use a steel leader for gar
;)
ive seen people use a rope with a noose to slip over a gars tail to help control them also

best way to catch gar is use a small peice of rope as bait and fray it out and when the gar strike it it gets caught on the teeth instead of using a hook. i think its much safer for the fish instead of taking longer to get a hook out of thier jaws. or one way i also like to fish for them is at night time when they are cruising the shore lines. you can use a worm on a single hook suspended by them or even a bare hook in most cases. this method works best though when they are near the shore and you can quickly get them out of the water with out them getting off the hook. use a light setup for this its much more fun! :)

No it was not weighed with a scale but I have never caught a bass this large until today. It was huge!

Nice catch, I myself went fishing the other day. I was using nightcrawlers and didn't catch much, just a foot long bass but I'm not sure what kind it was. It wasn't a peacock thought and we have those everywhere around here.
