Play sand is a good option however, it compacts very tight and can cause deadly anaerobic gas pockets to form in the bottom layers of the sand so just make sure to churn it up once in a while
 
I use pool filter sand from Leslie's pool supply. It looks pretty good for a while, but if you let algae grown on it (or diatomes) it starts to look pretty nasty so make sure to keep it clean. But with a price tag of $10 for 50 pounds, you can just swap it all out for new sand once it starts to look ugly
