A 479 gallon fish tank only has about $900 dollars worth of acrylic if built out of 3/4 inch thick acrylic and is 24 inches deep.

Most likely they are. Acrylic is expensive the thicker it gets and the bigger the tank the more it cost for labor especially if its built by a professional tank company. Its more economical to just do it yourself if you a little handy and understand the properties or acrylic, its not that difficult. Making it look nice takes practice, but the actual build is pretty straight forward. You really just building a box.
