There are 3 species I believe. The Irridescent shark, Paroon Shark and P. Gigas (do not know common name. Only P. Gigas is endangered. Like Oddball said the Paroon and Gigas use to be the same species, but have since been seperated. To answer your question No the paroon is not illegal, but until the Gov't changes their books they can hassle you and honestly it's not worth the trouble.

they still sell these at my petco..
are you sure they are paroons and not ID's? almost every petco/petsmart/ect sells ID's and I still don't know why, they get much to large for most people to keep.

There's a few more species than 3 but, the 3 you mention are those most frequently imported. Here's an illustration depicting the known species:

Although I still love that pic it is still missing a few species like.
P. Bocourti
P. conchophilus
P. larnaudii
P. pangasius

I am sure there is more still, those are just ones I've been researching a little that are not depicted.

Isn't pangasius same as hypohthalmus?

Maybe so, but it's still listed seperate on planetcatfish, and fishbase also I believe. Not sure that's accepted yet or not.

The common name of pangasius gigas is mekong giant catfish I believe. Paroon Sharks and ID sharks differ significantly in appearance although slightly similar as juveniles. Paroon's have a noticably larger dorsal fin and tend to end up with a whiter belly vs the ID shars which don't have as much contrast color wise as juveniles. Max size on ID sharks is much much smaller than on pangasius santiwongsei ~Trent
