Yeah I had two of them and they are really boring. They just sit there and do nothing unless its time to eat.

I lost them both ....Im not sure who to blame yet, but Im pretty sure it was my Channel Cat who ate them. During the day the Largemouth Bass would just chase them around. But at night time the Bass falls asleep and then Kirby(Channel Cat) wakes up and comes out. The next morning one was gone. Then the next week the other one was gone and I was like you know what, thats it! Im never getting these fish again!

I would honestly recommend Pickerel to someone who is going to dedicate an entire tank to them alone. Otherwise, either they will get big and eat other fish in the tank or they will be too small and get eaten by something bigger.

I would honestly reconsider getting this fish if I were you since you already understand the nature of the fish and you do realize they are pretty boring naturally.

You might as well keep Crayfish for that matter, they move more in one day than a Pickerel does.

if you dont mind me asking, how long did he say it would be until he gets some??

He told me that season is just starting and that they would be available soon. I emailed the website place from the first replay w/o any answer so far.

I've read that they can be "boring" but that is ok, I have always been fascinated with Northern Pike, and this is the closest I will get responsibly. I plan on keeping it alone permanentwise, while keeping a steady school of minnows and crayfish

Are you talking about Paul from Aquaculture? If so , you dont need to e-mail him, just pick up the phone and call him, chances are he will pick up or you can leave a message. But either way its pretty easy to get a hold of him.

I like your attitude regarding keeping fish responsibly. Many people on this site want to buy tiger muskie, ignoring the fact that they get huge. With muskie its not only that they get big, but they get big fast (as in a matter of months). I have kept many pickerel before. In fact they are amongst my favorite natives to keep. They grow only to about 10" in aquariums. I most recently had about 6 of them in a 125 with about 4 or 5 longear sunfish. The mix worked very well. I did not lose any fish.

The only thing I would recommend at this point is avoid keeping these with minnows or using minnows as feeders. Minnows will foul your water and run a risk of passing on disease to your fish. I don't think you will get them to eat crayfish, so you could keep them as tankmates if you want. I have had luck converting grass pickerel onto both raw shrimp and cichlid pellets.

If you have any questions once you get a pickerel, shoot me a pm. I can probably help you out.

thanks, I will be sure to PM you. I have kept tropical fish most of my life, but this will be my first native tank
