WTB | Pike pair | $50-250 | Lancaster PA | Pickup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I really want to move them but can't sell them in good consciousness. I got several pikes from Robin. One was a beautiful male cinta who unfortunately had a melanoma like cancer. The cause for these melanomas are typically contagious and now one of the lents is showing it. I am trying to do some research and find out if it needs to be spread by direct contact or not. I have a group of crenicichla nickeriensis I want to put on the same system ( different tank) as them and if I can't I might have an issue.
Oh shoot man. The Lents have a melanoma?

Interesting...I believe one of my friend's fish had melanoma. It was a large jet black splotch on the surface of the skin. All the research pointed to melanoma; however, there were no tumors we could see. Do you have a pic of your fish?

It was a black blotch on the lip that slowly spread. No tumors or bumps.

As stated no raised masses just spread of black to black green color. I confirmed the diagnosis through biopsy. Post a picture of yours in the sick forum and tag me

Like I said, it was a friend's fish and he no longer has it. It ate well and was otherwise healthy except for a large jet black blotch on the lower side of the fish that looked like an inkblot.

What tipped us off to look into melanoma was that I remembered reading that livebearers such as swordtails with black markings were considered to have cancer...especially if the black radiated into the fins. Interestingly, I'm told that if the black is only on the body like Berlin swordtails then that is considered benign. As opposed to if the black spread into the fins. Although it is confusing why red wag swords are considered okay. Where did you have the biopsy done?

I did the biopsy at home with the help of a friend ( the perks of being a vet). It was read out at antech, They have a pathologist I like. That being said if you need a good diagnostic lab for fish/reptiles/amphibians I have a good one in florida.

Didn't know you were a vet...good to know you got a conclusive diagnosis. That helps confirm what I saw on my friend's fish. If I ever come across something else that's puzzling, I'll take you up on your offer. Regards..

I’m in Chalfont, PA, I have one crenicichla strigata for sale, he’s about 8” long and eats anything you throw in the tank. I could let him go for 30$ if you are interested
