WTF, HITH?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Try buffing up the water temp to 83ish, and add some extra 02.

If it is hith, the scar will not go away, even once cured. If its just a cut, then it will heal up but still leave a cool scar. My oscar freaked out one time and cut his head open, unfortunatly. Now he has a wicked scar. It healed and scarred over within a week. Healthy fish heal quickly. Hopefully its not HITH, try to take a picture.

There's a distinction between HITH and LLE, lateral line erosion, which is what I think you're seeing. HITH is caused by parasites. LLE is environmental OR related to diet. LLE is correctable by massive water changes and better foods but it may not give you an unblemished fish when it grows out. Taking the fish back to the LFS and asking if there's some sort of adjustment that can be made might get you a new fish or credit to be used on something else. But going into the store and demanding something may not get you much. How do YOU react when ORDERED to do something? It wouldn't cost the LFS much to make you happy but try nicely. I've 86'd people from stores before and asked them to leave when they've shown up again.

Old and improperly stored foods contribute to LLE. Buy only fresh foods. Don't buy foods from stores that don't turn the product fast. Don't just buy bargain crap. Start reading the labels for content. Ask someone you respect what foods to use. Vary the diet using prepared or frozen foods mostly with ocassionally live treats. Don't buy feeders unless you KNOW they're healthy. If they come from the backroom, someone may have gone through 300 dead ones to pick you a dozen of not quite dead ones.
---
If you've had the fish for 2 months it's likely that the problem occured at your place NOT the store. They might still do an adjustment. Like I said before, it wouldn't cost them much to make you happy.

You may have old food. You may have old vitamins. You may not be storing your food properly.
1.unless you use a bag of Hikari in a month you should either buy a smaller bag or split the contents into 2 containers, using one and freezing the other.
2.quit buying the regular Hikari. Buy one in the aluminum bags. They don't allow light to penetrate to the food.
3.vitamins- I use baby vitamins from Toys-R-Us. They sell more baby items than anyone in the US. Vitamins from a fishstore may have no nutrient value by the time you get it. You have no idea how old it is OR how it 's been stored. Vitamin water?? Shake the vitamins EACH time you use it and only put it on the food just prior to feeding.
4. if YOU think your food quality may be in question. throw it out. You wouldn't eat hamburger meat that smelled bad would you?

Can a big blemish show up in only one day if its disease based?
Yes. You're asking if a sore(?) could show that's been building over a period of time but hasn't been visible before. Ever gotten a pimple?

In the case of LLE, the flesh below the skin is eaten away, consumed by the fish's body. A small bumping action or just the collapse of the skin would reveal the "hole."
