My black once hit his head so hard that the skin tissue pealed on top of his head but still no drop eye. Look at flowerhorns and dovii they bang their head all day long and no drop eye. I believe you can't just hit your head and have your eye fall out. Arowanas are built to jump and catch insects and hit their head a few times on a branch or tree when trying.selki;2746686; said:

I think most are refering to trauma as being an injury and not a emotionally painful event but it could be both.
A larger tank would help in reducing the chances of head trauma, but as long as there is a sturdy cover the aro will bang it's head.

As for the head trauma causing DE, I seen it happen twice on two different occassions in each eye with my silver. There are 3 other people who have testified as to the same in just this thread. So it seems more then likely.
Do you think the wild aros in your example hit there head anything like what your black experienced? I 'm sure there are rare cases, but if the aro cannot recover from the DE, in the wild it will die.

Also i believe what bderick is saying is partially true..in the wild there are 0 lids... nothing to stop them from jumping as high as they please... also have to take into consideration there are only 1 reflection...hence their eyes always looking up + to see if their prey is near.. with the massive space i dotn think theyd have a reason to consistently look towards the side where we humans come in to view our pretty fish...

Only thing I have to say about this is. Then why do silvers only develope DE in only 1 eye then? He swims back and forth and looking at me with both eyes then why would only 1 eye become DE?

Yeah not all develop DE in only 1 eye but most aros I've seen only have it 1 eye. And you said it was because it was arowanas are looking at us, not checking for food and threats which makes more sense then your original comment.
