WTF is my goldfish doing??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
eve tho ive kept my neons, hatchets, and corys at tempertures lower than 73 and gold fish at as high as 80,however both were only untill i realized the problems and rectified them. id say that the goldfihs will probably be fine in the warmwater the tetras prefer, but he will eat them all :grinno:

how bout if i put more hiding places?? :
Problem with this is tetras are more open water swimmers.. Not really hiders and would be no fun that way anyway..

Temp schmemp!
Goldies will do just frikkin dandy in whatever temp you have'em in...
Except boiling, but I prefer mine broiled:drool:

Goldies, Koi and Carp are so adaptive it ain't funny, last thing I'd ever worry about with'em is temp.

My wife kept four huge fancy Fantails for awhile, they often ate culled juvie guppies.

Just because they survive does not mean it is appropriate care for them. The dedicated fishkeeper optimizes tank variables according to the fishes' needs.

HarleyK, these fish do much more than merely survive in water temps outside (higher temps) their generally considered ideal temp range... They thrive.
Just take a look into the average ornamental pond during the summer months, most are to shallow, improperly shaded and hence maintain a relatively high daytime temp.
More than just algae is thriving in these ponds, Goldies, Koi and Carp are too.
Thriving... Growing, feeding and breeding better than in most aquaria by far.

6'>deep pond of sufficient area, icecapped in winter... Not a problem with minor care.
3'<deep pond of sufficient area, 75-80"F+ in the summer... They don't GAF.

Really, temp is the last area of concern when keeping these fish happy/thriving.

I used to keep goldfish together with tropicals. The last time I did it was to overwinter a pair of pond goldfish.

I know they survive...but thriving might be another matter and goldies have long natural lifespans. I don't think I'd do it anymore. If I ever had a pond again, I'd probably put the goldies into a large plastic bin to overwinter.

PS: The big fish eat little fish seems like one of the first rules of fishkeeping to know.
What I used to do if I suspected a fish might eat another one is put the smaller fish in a net breeder and test the reaction of the other fish. If I thought the smaller fish was not safe, then I left them isolated until big enough. Except for fries, I never had a fish eat another in my care.

Just because someone else improperly houses them doesn't mean that it is ok for everyone to do. I find this especially interesting considering your signature.
