WTH is this on my juvie festae?!

Still the same, he's been itching his head pretty frequently. Maybe the bugs are dying? BUMP!

Well, it spread to his much smaller sibling and got much much worse on both of them. The ebjd/catfish it seemed to go away. First I used the quick cure in the 55 but then I moved the two festae to a 5 gallon quarantine tank w/ the quick cure at recommended doses. Got worse.
Then tried ich attack no response and the film crap was spreading to their eyes. So then switched the sick tank water to tetra lifegaurd and melafix, still the same....

In a state of panic I did a quick cure bath (I believe the product is mostly formalin, couldn't find straight formalin at lfs) at ~.5 ml to one gallon of heavily aerated water.

SUCCESS!.... kinda. The tiny festae died 2 days later :( (they had stopped eating at this point and he was maybe 10X smaller than the bigger one and I guess he didn't have the reserves to make it all way thru the treatment) but the bigger one is doing much better the film is gone and only a couple little pores remain. He's still in the melafix/lifegaurd water in the quarintine tank. If I had to guess it was some kind of protozoan maybe a dinoflagellate that got hold during the crappy water conditions when I fed the different food. I'd never seen anything like it before.

Did you actually combine a formalin-based med with salt?

Initially, yeah. I put a little salt in the main tank. Not during the dip or quarantine. Is it bad to mix them?

It is a very bad combo. For some reason, the salt just reacts with formalin which can sicken the fish more and kill them. I did this combo which killed several of my goldfish stocks. I found out why a goldfish forum advised against this from my hard learned experience.:(

Of course, as salt also depletes oxygen supply, both the formalin and salt can successfully suffocate the fish unless you have a very vigorous water movement to ensure adequate oxygen supply. It's just adding stress though.
