I bought a jardini several months ago and had heard all the stories about them becoming killers at about 8 inchs. But i didnt want that so i put in dithers a pair of kissing gourmis but now the jardini which is a bout 8 inchs is being picked on by one gourmi not even half his size is that normal?

Those stories are not 100% true. Not all jardini are killer. Each individual arowana have their own aggressive level, not just a jar. I've seen 18" black aro harassing and nipping most of the fins of same size jar and asian aros. I've seen my 17" silver aro sometimes chases my 21" jardini.

THey may not all be true but they are often true i just wish my aro was a little more aggressive so he could stand up for himself

I did an experiment about jars aggression before back on 2006. Bought 8 jardinis at 6" grow them out to 14-15" and out of 8 of them only two became psycho, the rest are just as timid as the silver aros. I keep the best one and now it's about 21"+. The rest I sold them. The jar that I'm keeping right now is with a green aro, 2 black aros and a silver aros.

all the jars i come across are killers...i am looking for some layed back jars for my tank, and leis for that mater...i wish you could tell better at a smaller size if they would be killers or not...other then the obvous ones

too bad your wish will never come true.

I'd suggest you keep the jardini alone.

as Earl said not all jars are killers,iv never had a killer its just the fish itself

goes on a fish by fish basis, jars are known to be killers. but in some cases not.

I have a theory that I am testing, this came up from another aro keeper. He keep a small jar 6in, with a bunch of dats(3-14in). The jar eventually grew to 24in, he said that the jar has not eaten or beaten any of the fish in his tank. Our theory is that when the jar was young, the larger fish intimidated the jar. That in turn made him a mellow fish. The jar is still in the same 210 with about 12 dats(6-15in).

I also have a 210 with a 10in jar that I have had since 5in, that is keep with larger fish that don't take shiet from anyone. 11in longnose, 13in tropical gar and 3 10in tin foil barbs. Currently I have seen no fights or damaged to any fish. Jar competes for food very well, and swims together with the TFB. I am hoping jar will grow to 20in plus and still be mellow as it is now. it would be an awesome fish.
