So I've recently been asked to set up an aquarium for a doctor friend of mine in her home. The area is roughly 8' x 2'. I have an unlimited budget and the only requirements she has for me is that it must be freshwater and colorful and/or interesting. So my question is this: if you were given the same situation, what would you set up? Remember that money is not an issue. Thanks for your input, everyone!

Well for colorful, you can't go wrong with a nice bunch of africans cichlids, or since the area seems big enough, go with some south Americans. If you choose carefully, you can have a beautiful tank with no agression issues and that is easy to maintain.

planted tank with a shoal of 50 cardinal/neon tetras, loadsa cory jullii, 20 rummy nose tetras, several paairs of blue rams a shoal of discus and perhaps 6 silver dollars. Light with a metal halide and stick and actinic fluor bulb to really bring out the neon!!!

If you want to lose the plants cause of maintenance, get bogwood and black slate, and get some Uarru too!!!! My dream Tank! Very colourful and no aggro!

If the Doc want;s colourful then Discus would be the obvious freshwater choice. Not really my preference, but each to their own.

You could also go salt water, but the maintenence (time as much as money) would probably be a killer.

I'd stick with medium to small SA Chichlids with shoals of community fish in a planted tank for a more natural biotype. In an office environment you probably don't want a couple of big risky agressive fish.

However this is MFK, so screw what I said above, and dump in a couple of stingrays, an Aro and a shoal of Dats :-)

we're putting the tank in her home so aggressive we can do! right now I'm leaning more towards rays and aros although a nice big shoal of discus would look absolutely amazing.

Keep the suggestions coming!

I can't imagine a more colorful tank than african cichlids, and the beautiful rock work that goes with them, it would be an awesome tank!

Discus have the color, but how often are you going to be doing water changes. Being a doctor, I doubt they will have the time. I think a nice African tank would be the best choice. Nice hearty fish and very colorful with an easier maintanance schedule

I would do africans. they got awsome color
