Wyckii Owners.. Need your input!

I have had a number of wykii in the past and by the sounds of it I just got lucky (although for the past 20 years I have heard how aggressive they are but never seen it myself) - I have always kept mine in community settings, the last I had was about 22" and happily cohabited with a redtail, ozzy gourami, peacock bass, boulangerochromis and cypho frontosa - it is certainly a fish witha reputation - deserved or not! - whilst this fish is territorial with plenty of space it should not prove to be too problematic -

My main concern would be the jardini battering the wykii at this size - i suppose the issue is whether or not you have somewhere else to house it should you have a problem.

if it were me I'd give it a go.

Alright, here's the case.. I went to the fish store and after really looking at him, I decided to keep him.. Just to see his temperament with the other fish.. Here's the scoop.. I have a big piece of bogwood that creates a cave like environment for the fish on the left side of the tank and he basically took over it after releasing him in there.. All the plecos where on that wood except for one.. I just woke up this morning to observe and saw that my 4" Redfin Cactus (L024) tail had a chunk missing from the top part of the fin.. So, I was hoping to get the Wyckii that would grow up with all the fish and be a big happy family but unfortunately he's already claiming who's boss.. It's hard to believe because he's only 6".. The owner of the pet store is a good friend of mine and he said I can easily take it back for a refund.. I will have to let him go and I appreciate your responses.. I haven't posted any pics but they will be coming up soon!

I'm in the same boat as you Carl. My wyckii pretty much keeps to himself in his cave. If any fish go in there, they come rocketing out after the wyckii roughs them up bit, but other than that he's pretty well behaved.

He's at the 12" mark now, but I'm getting another tank ready just incase I see increased levels of aggression. I've heard that the true "Devil Cat" comes out at the 12" mark...we'll see.

Alright, so before I got him in the bag to return him, the Wyckii ended up going to the driftwood where the Niger was at and started striking him for no reason. I could not believe that I am seeing a catfish bullying other fish for the fun of it. Very cool catfish for sure but it is just too bad I already have a few fish in the 180. I would house him elsewhere but the idea of a 180 is to keep them all there. He's officially back at the fish store. Anybody know any cool looking gentle giants that is compatible with the Niger? I would like something more active than the Niger and was thinking like the Sailfin Pictus or something around that nature..

KenyanSandBoa and I must be very lucky indeed !!!

in a 180 you won't be keeping the niger for long anyway - L. pictus are a great fish - but also get too big really for a 180 - but you shouldn't have any problems with the niger - although they are not that active - you could get a tigrinus.

I guess we are lucky...fingers crossed. :D

I was thinking tig too...either that or a Juruense. My Jururense spends all day just chilling out in the open. He'll bolt when I open the hood to feed, but he's out within a minute or two eating along side his datnoid tankmates.
