I don't see what the point of the xanthics are, they just look like midas.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I remember you saying that before. I like the xanthic version better myself, but to each his own. I don't mind it looking like a Midas, and I get the benefit of a smaller adult size, important to me since my current largest tank is only a 150. Your's is good looking to me also, good luck with them, hope you get some good breedings.

In one of the pictures I mentioned white splotches showing up. I thought about it some at work today, and it got me thinking that the white spots are just remaining patches of it's former color. The orange color is likely taking hold after all the foods I've been feeding her; Tetra Color Flakes, live and frozen brine shrimp, frozen mysis and krill, live redworms, Hikari Cichlid Bio Gold pellets, Omega One flakes and pellets, Formula 1 and Formula 2 flakes, and NLS.

never even though about the size difference but great thinking when selecting your fish. You only have the one right? Mine should be spawning soon if you wanted some regular morphs. I'm in Michigan so shipping frys shouldn't be too expensive.

Yep, I just have one. I'll think about the fry, I have babies from other fish, and I'm trying to buy some more growout tanks, so I'm not sure how much room I going to have. I've acually been thinking about some of those Parachromis "Yellow Heads", but I'm really not sure about anything at the moment.

I have 5 regular saggitaes and they have been fighting about every day for a month now and two have been guarding one side of my tank for over a week. Not sure if they bred and eggs got eaten or what. I have five 4" clown loaches with them and a 10" pleco. Not sure if they feel like deffending their eggs. Thinking about pulling the other species from the tank tomorrow to see what happens.

heres a shot of my 7" male.

He was outgrowing the pack by 1-2" but this other male just caught up out of no where. Now the slightly smaller male has been beating this dude up everyday, they both have some nice battle wounds on their noses which should heal up no problem. I like watching them fight for now anyways lol.
he looks well fed

My experience is the sags get just as big as any Midas. I have a foot long F0 xanthic male that shows no signs of slowing his growth rate. Here he is in my outdoor tank/pond:

I've seen no difference in size potential of any of the citrinellus complex members. I've had specimens from all of the available varieties grow to a foot or more in length.

No worries, though... Your 150 should be fine. Enjoy your fish -- you have a nice one!

I've read saggitaes only get 12" but mine have grown over a inch a month since I've had them and don't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. CHC have you ever kept zaliosums?

Yes...... I've kept several (I actually had two of the originally imported wild pairs). My biggest male got gigantic..... 13-14" when I had him...... He is now quite old and lives with a well known cichlid breeder in Tennessee. Zalies are without a doubt the most fast and aggressive feeders I've seen in the CA cichlid kingdom. I have not seen quite the same from the sags in spite of their similarity. They are still, though, very lively like all of their citrinellus type cousins.

yeah, I went with saggitaes because supposedly they don't get as big but they are still super agro. Mine are pretty mellow although the males are always fighting. I'd love to own a zaliosum but probably won't dedicate a tank just for one.

I guess wherever I read Sags only reach 7-8 inches in not accurate. Maybe that was just based on ones they caught in the lake, some fish get bigger in aquariums than they do in the wild.

cchhhc, I like your big sagittae, he's handsome.

Thanks..... He's better looking in person!

Regarding size in the wild, you won't see many cits with giant humps and fat guts swimming around........ Plenty in aquariums though! It's funny how "wild caught" fish are the craze when what most people really want isn't typical of a wild fish at all!
