I think they knew they couldn't compete with Sony and Microsoft when it came to graphics and games for the hard core gamers. So with the Wii, they decided to target a different market -- kids, old folks, girls, and people who don't normally play games. I think their plan worked out brilliantly. I mean just from a business sense, they did everything right with the Wii and now they own the market for girl/kid/old people casual gamers while Sony and MS fight over the hardcore gamer and young male group .
I read the wii sold like 15 million more consoles than either the 360 or ps4. So I guess it was crazy successful.
Also I was surprised to see the game boy color actually outsold those 3 consoles.
