I went down the coast recently to a lake that is usually freshwater, but this year it was open to the sea and the lake was teeming with life. There were tons of oyster gobys, mullet, bream, huge stingrays, garfish, the largest glass perchlets i have ever seen 10+cm, pacific blue eyes, and so much more. I love brackish animals because of the special traits they seem to have. Archerfish shoot water out of their mouths, mudskippers live on the land, mangrove monitors have salt excretion glands, Saltwater Crocodiles are the biggest reptile known to man, and they can be found in coral reefs.

Sailfin Tetra
Crenuchus spilurus

Size: 2”
pH: 6.5-7.0
Tank size: 15G/1 small group
Country of origin: Guyana, Suriname, as well as most of the Amazon and Orinoco basins

Crenuchus spilurus is a peaceful and colorful mid-sized tetra that occurs in rivers throughout South America. It is the sole member of its genus. They are also believed to be one of the few fish capable of infra-red vision. Though some similarly-sized characins are known to be nippy, this species is not.

I’m fortunate that my lfs always has these…and misfortune that I don’t have the tank space.
I definitely want to try a group some day, hopefully soon.
I’ve read they are a lot like cichlids in behavior.

pH: 7.0-7.5
Tank size: 10G/1 small group

Temperament: Nippy, though relatively peaceful
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Want a dwarf puffer, but for some reason don’t want a pea puffer? Then try Carinotetraodon imitator, a species so similar that they were classified as the same species for fifty-eight years, and are even known to shoal alongside them in the wild. Like their close relative, this fish does not require hard foods to trim its teeth, which is very rare for puffers.
