Amaralia hypsiura
is a quite rare relative of the somewhat common Bunocephalus coracoideus, the banjo catfish. Aside from these two, there are about forty other banjo catfish species, some of which I plan on covering in this thread. This species is known to change color at its own will, making for incredible camouflage abilities.

Harmand’s Freshwater Sole
Brachirus harmandi

Size: 4”
pH: 7.5-8.0
Tank size: 25G/Individual
Country of origin: Cambodia, Laos, Thailand
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Peaceful, may be bullied by larger fish
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: [Enters brackish, though exact info is insufficient]

Description

Brachirus harmandi is an occasionally-kept freshwater sole. Like all flatfish, including the several aforementioned species, these fish require a fine sand substrate to burrow. Harder substrates such as gravel may damage their delicate skin. This species is very small compared to many other Brachirus species. NOTICE: The link provided above is to a website based in Germany. Most entries previous to this one contain US links. If you live outside of Germany, this fish may be particularly expensive to ship.

Orange Saddle Fugu Pufferfish
Takifugu ocellatus

Size: 6”
pH: 7.5-8.5
Tank size: 50G/Individual
Country of origin: China, Vietnam
Diet: Live and frozen foods. It is imperative that you provide some sort of hard food
Temperament: Aggressive, though may tolerate large, fast fish
Temperature: 65-80° F
sg: 1.010-1.025

Description

Takifugu ocellatus
is a quite aggressive brackish/marine pufferfish found in Asia. They are considerably more aggressive than even most pufferfish detailed on this thread. Full marine conditions are recommended for adults of this species, though brackish may also work, and they can also live in freshwater for a decent amount of time.

DAY 233

Country of origin: Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Relatively peaceful, though predatory
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Mastacembelus liberiensis is a rare African spiny eel. They reach a moderate size, usually slightly over one foot. This is a hardy species, though, like almost all spiny eels, they can easily be outcompeted, and they need many places to hide.

DAY 234

Longfin Banded Hill Trout
Opsariichthys evolans

Size: 3”
pH: 7.0-7.5
Tank size: 20G/1 small group
Country of origin: China, Taiwan
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Peaceful
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Despite its name, Opsariichthys evolans is not a trout at all, but rather a form of cyprinid, closer to carp, minnows, and barbs. These fish are similar in many ways to true minnows and barbs. The website linked claims that this species reaches 7-8”, though this is inaccurate.

Can't wait to see that common-looking-but-actually-extra-rare certain fish I messaged you about!
