Xingu update

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All those fish look great pal, the peacock bass really stands out with its colour.
Thanks Rich I do my best to take care of them

I have a 40g sump with a 2,400gph pump tagged along with a Fx-5 I have a small tank so the turn over is pretty high. I also have a 1500gph powerhead. I'm gonna get a 225 maybe January but who knows xmas is right around the corner we'll see. Next filter is gonna be k1 forsure in a sump with ceramics

Nice K1 is the way to go amazing stuff and can handle some serious bio load. I have one set up 55 gallon Rubbermaid trash can going to add a second one soon, I am going so something similar to the midi pond system upper K1 trash can will be static kind of like a sediment chamber I’m trying to do away with the pleated filters they clog up to fast not sure if it will work but if anything I can just turn it into another K1 reactor

Yeah. My next setup I am going to flip the flow in a Hayward and use that for K1 as well as submerged media. My friend had great results with a similar setup. This is pretty much what I run now but on a smaller scale. I was going to do plastic beads but changed my mind.

Thanks it really means alot to hear that about my bass coming from a fellow cichla member yours is beautiful too, my tank is a 600 gallon I am at 6kgph turnover my 75 gallon growout is linked to the filtration and soon a 180 gallon and a second 55 gallon trash can so total system volume should be near 1000 gallons with all the tanks and the current 110 gallon sump, 55 gallon reactor, 21" hayward sand filter each tank also has its own seperate filtration even though the 75 gallon growout is linked to the 600 filtration I have a fx5 and a eheim canister on there as well. The 180 will have a 75 gallon sump with a its own K1 reactor and linked to the 600 filtration system.

How does the K1 do in the hayward? I have ultima 2 media in mine but when I back flush I loose some each time. I have strected the back flushing to every six months and my pressure gauge never hits 10 psi. Filtration always interest me you will have to let me know how the reversed flow works out for you.

Ultima media is sand correct? My boy had great results running the K1 in the Hayward. I'd say his tank was over stocked with zero issues. He had about 10 12-14"+ bass and 2 13"+ rays, fed them ever day a good amount and they were all in a 210 gallon. He would backwash the unit with every water change.

I will let you know how my filtration setup works when the time comes. I am big into filtration myself and also run a very high turnover rate. It is key for a successful setup and this is where most people go wrong. I also don't consider powerheads turnover, only the amount of water that actually passes through the media. I saw some mention in this thread from someone else about powerheads. I alway say it's not so much about the size of the tank as it is about the size of your filtration and turnover. As long as the aerobic bacteria can convert the ammonia into nitrates fast enough. I never have any measurable traces of ammonia in my tanks when testing my water. Your water change schedule is important too. As much as we strive to culture as much anaerobic bacteria as possible to consume the byproduct nitrates, it's never enough to be noticeable IMO and it needs some help with its removal.

Yah I definitely don't include powerheads as turn over as that only adds more flow. I've always been a big believer it's important to invest more money into your filtration than fishes as they are the reason your fish is alive. I do around a 75% w/c on all my tank 3 times a week change socks every other day. I would love to see a picture of your set up im curious to see how to set up a k1 sump. I'm considering buying a 75g tank and using Japanese matts as baffles for k1 compartment anyone think this will work? Pretty much [_|___|_]. Super simple.
