I have a 120 gallon setup with a large sump filter. I want to add a Rena XP filter and can get a new one (XP2) for $70 at my lfs for a limited time. An XP3 would be better, but since I am already running another large filter system, I was wondering if people thought the XP2 would still work well. The lfs does not carry XP3's and is only running the special on the XP2. I want to add it for additional mechanical filtration. So, what do ya'll think?

I think it would serve better as an all biological filtration unit, or partial chemical and bio. I think if you were to pack it entirely with foam/sponges for the mechanical filtration, it would clog, and the flow rate would slow down immensely, ultimately resulting in other problems(motor). However, if you were to pack it with both chemical and biological it would complement your existing filtration system well. Just my 2 cents, I do own 2 Xp3s an Xp2 and one Xp4 that I just picked up today. And my two Xp3's are all filled with substrat pro, ceramic rings, and ehfilav, and like I said for an all bio filtration unit, they work great, but since you want chemical, do half and half.

What is the best type of filter for mechanical filtration? I have a huge compartment in my sump for bio, my nitrate never goes above 10 ppm. I just want to clear up some of the "floaties" in the water.

Home made-

Or marineland-Can't be beat for mechanical filtration-IMO

Same as reply at C-F

The canister will not provide that much extra mechanical. If you really want more mechanical add a couple of AC110s.

Can you use all foam blocks (I think six) our do you recommend the carbon and other filter media recommend on the ac110 directions? How many inches do you need between the tank and the wall to fit an ac110? Thanks!

If you decide to go with AC110's, then install two block sponges on each one, and on top of the second block add a layer of floss. That should leave your water very clear.
