is the xp3 good enough for just one on a 125 gallon? I've heard of people putting 2 on their tanks that size. I was going to get an xp4 but from another post on here looks like it might not be best.

I use my XP3 on a 40gal.
XP4 has some bad user input on the forum.
Redundancy is redundant. A couple smaller filters is what I prefer,
but if you want a single get an FX5; yer gonna need a bigger boat.

I have an XP3 on my 110 gallon and the water is crystal. My only concern is that a 125 is 6 feet long. Two smaller filters on each side might be better in a tank that big.
Go with the XP3 for a while and see what happens. If once you start adding more fish you notice a problem with your water quality, supplement the filtration with another filter. Here is a pic of my tank to show water clarity. Oh, and when I added a piece of Poly Filter there was a noticeable difference

No I never stock my tanks all at once. Gradually over time yes, but not all at the same time.
