XP4 or FX5 or maybe something else entirely

My pops is looking at a new filter for his 125. He sees a problem where i apparently dont. But if he wants to spend the money I cant stop him. I want to him to get the right filter.

He came home and was telling me about the Rena XP4, jokingly i said "hell why dont you just get a fluval x5 why your at it."

Well he took it to heart and is looking into both of these. I've heard horror stories for both. But the biggest one for the Fluval is the low surface area, and occasional slow output.

However, it seems like there were almost 3 people impressed with the Rena. Everyone else has had some sort of problem with it.

How does everyone feel about either filter? is there another comparable canister filter? Possibly Marineland, Eheim?

well thats two for fluval, and none for the XP4. Do you guys know where to get an x5 cheaper than 300 online??? cause last time i looked my LFS had them for the standard 299.

I bought mine yesterday on ebay for $175 + $20 ship = $195. Also, ebay was offering 35% back so total came to around $130. The 35% deal wont happen again. They are now offering 10%. Ebay has them typically for $200 ship. A member on this board JohnPTC sells them for $200 shipped or cheaper if picked up locally.
*x5 is fx5 right? Cause I'm referring to fx5

edit: Ebay has one right now for $175 - 10% off = $157.5 + $20ship = $177.50
The 10% off thing is like a rebate and requires paypal account.

I've found it to be a good alternative to an FX5.

I have been running the FX5 since it was available with zero problems, my only recommendation is do NOT run any additional foam besides what comes stock.

the rena plumbing looks cheap and ugly...
