Check out the [FONT=arial,sans-serif][SIZE=-1]Eheim Classic 2250.

I've found it to be a good alternative to an FX5.

The 2260 or 2262 would be more comparable. The 2262 is hands down one of the most impressive filters I have ever looked at. I don't really like how the marineland is designed. I don't like XPs and I don't like the Fluval FX5. The 2080 is also a good filter, as long as you are running some modifications for heavy stocks, or an ac110 as mech.

I,m Running 4 - FX5,s now. 2 on my 240, 1on my 180 and one on my 120 gal.
All seem to work fine. Only problems I have had with them were all cause by me. To much media put in the filter. Like someone stated , only use foam that comes with the filter. Low flow is a sign that it needs to be cleaned I have found.

upgrade the emp 400 to an AC110...

fx5 rena xp4 both ok look at eheim

I had an FX5 with no issues at all. I then down graded my tank and got a 405. I took all the media(bio-max) out of the FX5 and put it all into the 405. All of the media that was in the fx5 fit in the 405. all except a handfull, which wasn't a big difference. Now that i know the FX5 and 405 media capacity is simular, i probely wont be getting another FX5 any time soon. I would get two 405's if i were you. Two cost about the same as one FX5 and hold almost twice as much media together than one fx5. Plus if one fails the other will support the tank until you replace/fix the other one. You wouldnt be losing out on much mechanical filtration either, or GPH. So alothough i was once one to say the FX5 is the ultimate filter. I now think two 405's is a better choice.
