obviously you don't own any xp's. I have 2 xp3's and although they are good filters they don't even come close to the advertised flow rate unless you have no media in it. I am not saying I am an fx5 fan because I don't own one and frankly I think the fluval filters before it were junk. BUT you would have to buy 2 of them to come close to the same kind of performance as the fx5. So I wouldn't call being filter smart means that we are whinning and crying. It just means we know what we want filters to do for us!!

according to rena the xp3 only pushes 189gph when filled with media.. now that sucks. if you add a media to the xp4 full of media it will be about the same flow as the xp3 with 3 baskets.. this is terrible
Too bad these various filter manufacturers couldn't adopt a industry standard for rating their filters...
