Its a female. there were three but unfortunately only one survived.
she is about a week old and eating well :-)

Very nice! especially at that size

thanks everyone.
had a bit of a disaster but fortunately not with my rays this time ....

the disaster was with my fire eel. I had noticed one afternoon that it had gone missing. didnt think there was any room for it to get out but it found a way and I discovered it down the back of the tank dead and stuck to the carpet and the wood.
had to grab it by its head and pull it till it came unstuck. eyes were listless and white, the white spines had poked through because the skin had dried and tightened .....
as I heald its lifeless dried and damaged body in my hands I remembered how resillient eels are and whilst i thought there was basically no chance I thought what the hell, cant hurt by trying. if anything it just gets discarded later.
droped the remains in the tank and i swear I saw it move, even in its dehydrated state. though it could have just been nerves or something reacting to the water.
after it had hydrated for about ten mins it still looked dead. i thought that well if ive come this far i might as well see it though and make the effort. so i grabbed it and held its head above the bubbler so the air and water would pass over the presumably very dry and damaged gills.
after a few minutes i saw its mouth move ! could just be the bubbles though. inspired by the movement i stayed with it for an hour keeping it in the flow. gradually i saw the gills start to move and by the end it was actually breIthing on its own !
i put extra air and power heads in the tank to maximise aeration. understandably the eel didnt move much.
the next day it was still alive but it seemed that it could only swim round corners and only backwards :-( . due to the lack of oxygen over such a long period i was guessing possible brain damage.
the day after that the eel was belly up. I righted it many times in the day putting it between items in the tank to keep it the right way up but it would swim backwards awkwardly and end up belly up again.
the day after I saw the dreaded fungus on its body in several places including its sensitive nose so i increased water changes in the hope that there might still be some light at the end of this seemingly endless dark tunnel.
several days later and the eels is only still alive !!! not only that but his eyes are clear too. his nose is still rough but on the mend.
to top it all off he can now swim forward again !! woot !
who would have thought you could dehydrate and re-hydrate eels ?

as for the little ray, she's doing well too eating fine although im yet to get her off of earthworms (little difficult atm as she is in with the eel who is receiving special treatment).
im looking forward to seeing how the pattern turns out too considering what her brothers and sisters look like and i will post more pics as her pattern develops :-)

Holy! Way to go, I would have never thought... Good for you man, I really hope it isn't suffering and like you said there isn't significant brain damage. Wow.
