Anyone know anything about the status of Yaks and Bison in ether the USA or Canada? Do you need a game farm permit to even keep them (even if its more of a pet type setup), can you keep them like general livestock (no permit) or do you need a special permit? thanks

I think it all depends on your state/county/township laws. It's wacky, every place is different unfortunately.
i agree. my uncle has a friend with a bison ranch... not exactly ideal pets, but cool to have

There's a bison herd for sale 20 minutes from my house, they taste sooo good

Latshki I notice you are from Prince Edward island. I am located pretty close to there how much do they want for their herd?

No clue. it's the government trying to sell them, it's this herd that they have had for ages in a park
It's a well established herd and they have to cull every year, there's at least 20 or 30

I think I know where you mean, was there one time as a kid. Its that Provincial Park type setup (Buffalo land provincial park) where they are in a fenced pen.Do you know if they are selling the entire herd or just selling excess stock (always thought that was a fairly popular tourist attraction in PEI).

There is a guy who keeps a herd of bison and a herd of elk not 5 minutes from my house. I think it's the same as keeping horses as far as regulations go

You do need a permit to keep bison and bison hybrids that is more than 50%. And you need to have them tested out for the diseases. But it's easier to manage yaks than a bison herd. You can't keep the bison with a single strand hot wire fence but you can keep the yaks in there....depends how docile the yaks are. My neighbors had a bison as a bottle calf and they put the bison with the dairy cows as a company for four years till they shot him for beef.

But be careful with the bison, they are still wild animals and will kill you.
