Beautiful find with the article. I still believe we are looking at a third possible sp that’s not a hybrid either haha. But maybe is fugupuff fugupuff could scoop you, thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter , and I some Chinese soldatovs which are easier to get than the Russian ones, šŸ˜‰šŸ˜‰šŸ˜‰šŸ˜‰.

ahh… im retired from the ā€œbig fish gameā€. Im good with 36ā€ or less these days lol…. Content with this guys small stature whatever it is. Even with the article and the tests they did the pic of Asotus are still all over the place for any kind of size reference. If there bred/made for food and we get the scraps so to speak. Id think its safe to say there comparable to TSN in the hobby. Been watered down so much were getting the smallest size available and a somewhat generic species all together. I feel confident on moving this guy into a 5’x3’x2’ 230g for life now. Gave him a shot at a bit better life in larger quarters šŸ˜‚, i dont think he needs it tho. Was expecting a 30ā€-36ā€ size specimen. Ill b very surprised if this one ever exceeds its current size based on the similiar looking group Viktor kept. Urs is def. Different. Also i thought Wes has already brought in S. Soldatov before. Could have sworn i seen them on a cple of his lists.

Does your cat have visible teeth that look relatively large? Take a pic. OFR has a large albino Chinese wels and he looks oddly similar in head shape to yours but is much thicker, but with large teeth like mine. Three sp imo. The head on theirs is much bigger. Your wels vs viktors looks more like a minor deformity possibly then natural difference in head shape

I swear I do not mean to hijack thread, but just wanted to show you three examples of so called Chinese wels that differ in looks. Here they are. This one is from OFR. They haven’t shown him in a bit in a video but I reckon it’s around 20ā€. Very thick.

Here is another ā€œChinese welsā€ normal color. Look at head shape, the degree of slope vs mine, and eye placement. As well as how the body isn’t as compressed horizontally compared to yours. This pic is a from a friend who got it from Rodrigo in 2021. He’s roughly 19ā€ now.

And here is one wes brought in recently taken from his Instagram.

Ive seen this one in person… didnt pay it much attention at the time. Im over due to visit them tho lol… it looks like it has the bottom jaw similar to urs with exposed teeth. Looking at Vince’s videos of the meter size specimen the bottom jaw looks like this ones/urs also. Seems to be the main difference. Hard to notice until u see it… i cant un see it now tho šŸ˜‚ā€¦ mine does not have that thin bottom jaw or exposed teeth at all.

All good my man… were about the only 2 trying to figure this out it seems šŸ˜‚. Its on topic šŸ’€šŸ¤™. Blake had a pretty large one down in florida. It ate all his koi lol.. its in a pond tho and hasnt been shown in a cple yrs now. Mine was brought in before all of these others also. Top jaws on most of these are all pretty straight. Mine has a bend in it. The pic from the article i showed shows the jaw differences as well as the exposed teeth. Ill grab a pic of viktors old ā€œamurā€ which i dont think were amur either. There the closest to mine ive seen. Smaller stature, no teeth and more bug eyed.

Here’s a pic I snagged of one of wes’ last imports of glanis. Dream fish. I cannot lie. It’s funny as we want what we can’t have. I think if I couldn’t have Chinese wels but could have euro I would go to the ends of the earth to get my Chinese wels🤣.

These guys have been found in the Amur river correct? If that’s true that means I could possibly keep the big boy in my pond. Here in New Jerz the winters are fierce. He survived in my tank last year in the unheated part of the fish garage. Lethargic yes, but fine. My plan was to build it for the bambusa but that’s a whole different story lol.

Speaking of personality; in my opinion Chinese wels as they get older get more bold. Granted my guy lives in a dark tank but when he doesn’t feel startled he patrols his tank all over the water column, and cruises like a missile. Very easy to hand feed. I’m going to use the warm weather we will get till about early October to get him fattened up.
