Yellow Acara (Aequidens Metae) Spawn #3

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks all! I'm glad that I was able to give a glimpse of these fish during spawning...not too many pics on the interwebs of these guys.

Absolutely stunning!! Excellent work

What are their temperaments like?

I would label them as mildly aggressive towards most other species. The male and female are more aggressive toward the severums, the rams, and the plecos but almost completely ignore the school of myleus & flagtail. During breeding they are territorial but not overly aggressive. They seem more gentle than most other cichlids I've kept, often giving the other fish a little open mouth bump rather than an all out chase around the tank or Ray Lewis style hit. The Myleus can swim within inches of the spawn and for whatever reason do not seem like a threat.

Conspecific temperament is about the same. Both fish stay within close proximity of each other most of the time. The male sometimes chases the female around the tank but again it seems more gentle than other breeds. Maybe it's Yellow Acara foreplay...who knows.

They have made great community fish. They are not at all shy and fit in for the reasons mentioned above. They do dig a bit more than I'd like, but they are cichlids.

The male has become pretty curious when I hand feed the severums...I'm hoping he'll come up to the surface for a delicious cricket at some point soon.

Wow, wonderful pics. You are right, there are a limited number of pics available on the net. My aqualog copy has some nice ones, but your pictures really capture a handsome looking fish. Last Sunday at our local club meeting, I picked up 18 metae fry submitted through our breeder award program. I have not yet seen the parents but your pictures has me glad I picked this bag of fry up last week. Very nice and thanks for sharing the info.

I got a young pair from Rapps at the ACA...and have them alone in a 2'x2'x1' tank with some driftwood and a couple of flowerpots...

They've spawned a couple of times but seem to have eaten the eggs.

These are gorgeous fish and have oranges and yellows that are amazing!

*****Update******

The pair didn't get it right this time either...the spawn was abandoned and all eggs have been eaten. Sad, but not unexpected.

On a positive note, I went downstairs to my "overflow" 55 gallon and discovered that my other pair had spawned overnight. This is their first spawn, but they are already looking to be better parents than their siblings. This spawn is considerably larger, and both parents have been very aggressive towards a gold severum in the tank. They again ignore the myleus almost completely. The female has not left the spawn site, and daddy is playing tank bouncer.

Here are some moar pics. They are as good as I can get, as she laid the eggs on a flower pot under a large pile of manzanita and anubias. I didn't want to disturb her by moving things for a better picture...I am hopeful for some wigglers in a few days!
