Oh yeah and the link that Pacu Mom provided even shed a little light on why the species has been absent from the hobby for so long.I have always wanted a pacu as I thought it would be nice to have a non aggressive "piranha" in the tank but I've never gotten one because of their growth potential.The yellow belly fills the bill nicely.

According to this site, Piaractus Mesopotamicus can get to 85 cm (33 inches), 20 kg (44 pounds).

If the above site is correct, the 18" is also correct. This label for red belly pacu is correct.
red belly pacu do grow to 10". Then they grow to 20", 30".....

Be careful with relying on the sources from websites and books for the fish size. Majority of times, they are either underestimated or overestimated the fish's actual size, even on respectable field guide books or websites.
Straight from Jeff Rapps stock list regardless of size they are still a nice fish

Pacu are wonderful, personable fish. That yellow belly pacu is certainly more interesting looking than red belly pacu which are a dime a dozen, metaphorically speaking. I hope Jeff Rapps is correct about the size of the fish. USGS must not have their facts straight. Perhaps Jeff Rapps can straighten them out.
