Hello,

im new to cichlids and a fews months back I purchased 3 yellow labs. I just started to notice that one of my Labs is losing the yellow color and its turning white????? Is this common or is my fish sick? Its been eating well, its very active little fellow and it has plenty of hiding spots.

i think that the whitenes probably means it is a labidichromis chisumlae, although i have never heard of labs changing color before although i had a johanni 6months ago it was ornage with black stripes along it and now its a really dark nice blue with the black lines along it.

thanks for the reply. im trying to get a pic but they get really restless and scared when i try to take a pic for some reason.

More likley you got a cross of a lab and zebra and as they get older the yellow labs get less yellow. Though some normal yellow labs far removed from wild will tend to have a whiter belly.

Not even close to true. Atlantis imported some wild caught yellow labs that had white in them. It is naturally occuring in the wild. It is not a cross. They do occassionally have white. It's all in the collection point. Lions Cove labs can be all yellow or part yellow and white. Nkhata Bay Labs are all white(not blue like their name would have you think). Nothing hybrid about them.

I don't know now you are trying to make me look like an ars... But well I still have to say that if you buy a yellow lab and it first was yellow and it turns white it likely has some mix in it. Now with yellow labs I always am suspect anyways. But if it were to originally have the whiter hue like the Lion's coves do I would be less suspect. But the fact that this one has changed overtime basically makes me think it isn't a f1 lions cove... or anything close to it.

In all honesty it is dang hard to say how pure these fish ever are, and I wouldn't sell any of my fry because I never felt confident enough to say they weren't some mix.

Still that said they are great fish, will look beautiful and bring lots of enjoyment. I realize I said the hybrid word quickly but well with this fish I have seen much better looking yellow labs from misc petco tanks than what is sold as wild caughts. So obviously if you are looking for a good looking fish don't worry about it. If you are looking for a fish you want to make money off of the fry well then you can have fun tracking down repitable f1/f2s.

thanks for the reply. this is no prize fish. Its an inexpensive LFS lab. so if its mix its ok to me. so he should be fine health wise right?

Assuming the white you are talking about looks it is actually the scales and not some cottony stuff on top of the fish, you are just fine. (To get an idea of all the different ranges of yellow labs, just do a google image search for yellow lab cichlid.)
