Yellow lab Throat Problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Egg crate will not protect from the fry swimming to the other side of the divider and being in with the big guys though. I would just get a divider, which your lfs should sell for about $20, or go and get a 10 gal tank and use that to grow the fry out a little bit. The other thing you can do is let them go free in the tank. Usually when I have a batch of fry I have 1 or 2 survive.

i have about 18 big boys in there and im sure they would devour any fry the second they are worn. i will grab a tank divider and isolate the pregnant mother. do i need to remove her when she lays the eggs? or will she not eat them? then what do i do to care for the babies? food? temp? ph?

She's already done the dirty while you've been occupied with daily life. The eggs/fry are 'holding' in her throat because she's a mouthbrooder. As for what you do when the babies are 'spit out' we'll have to see what other MFKer's say.

if you dont have a lot of rock work in your tank i would highly suggest it. My 112 tank is like a breeding playground. And 80 - 90 % of the fry survive. I constantly have to sell or give away my fry cause i have to much.
Just have a few ledges or alot of crevices so the fry can hide there. Mine group together and the parents protect that side of the tank so alot of aggression goes on occasionaly. Large plant groupings help the mother feel more at ease. and also a good place for the fry if they dont like the rocks.... But over all congrats

when my first fry came along i was in the same boat. nervous and excited as he!!. Alls i can say is just keep them in the same tank, do a little bit more of the feeding so the fry can eat, or if its in a well established tank, you wont need to worry about if the fry are eating cause when you clean the tank you always dont get 100% of the muck.

Once they are spit then should take crushed flake. Once they are a little bigger I would switch to crushed pellets like NLS.

Often fish holding will go after food like they are eating, but will not take the food into their mouths.

Don't worry about the fry if you have a lot of rock work. If this is her first time she may swallow them.
