toooooo much protein if you ask me!:D
i agree... i hate to see a skinny malawi... almost breaks my heart when i see their stomach concave...but seeing one this way is also not a good thing... next step can mean bloat if not there already..... best thing now is to refrain from feeding this fish a few days and get them on more veggie then protein ....good luck..

I can honestly tell you I have not had anything vaguely resembling bloat in my tank since I started using Dainichi. Knock on wood. These fish are as healthy as can be. Chubby but healthy. BTW, there is all the salad they can eat in the tank. My algae is lush!

thats good... but i can tell you i was a heavy feeder... and a couple of mine looked like yours.. and they are the only ones i don't have now... since then i feed every other day... it took awhile for them to go ... not an overnight thing.. but they were not healthy...and it finally caught up to them.... only you know if your a big feeder like i was... only you can learn to hold back... i know it is tough..but fat fish are not healthy fish..

Dr, I want a second opinion!
Mike, feel free to weigh in on this WEIGHTY matter. LOL
These 2 are just more efficient feeders. Some of the fish in my tank are fairly lean. Like I said at the start. How do you cut back on a couple of the fish, but not all?
We used to have 2 cats (ex-wife got em in the divorce...I would have fought it, but they are really my daughter's cats!) Anyhow, one makes Garfield look svelte. The other had a very shapely shape. Couldn't keep food separate for one to slim down. Same dilemna here. Capisce?

THAT is perfectly true.. some are easy keepers.. i know feeding the skinnys and the fatties in a mixed tank can be a problem.....i quess you can only try to do the best you can...

I've had the same issue in my tanks some of the other fish stay svelt and a few get chubby, It can definitely lead to the bloat I've seen it happen to a couple, I think yours will be fine just watch the overfeeding as liz said!!

OMG, you shoulda seen my synodontis cat... so fat he could barely swim. And he was a bully. He picked on all the cichlids. Got rid of him before I knew I was getting the bigger tank....dammit!

Bogo,

If you look close on this picture, right just before the anal fin, you see that little spot protruding out? That's an ovipositor spot and a sign it's a female. You should see a rounded area in the Yellow Lab you posted, similar to the look of that Hongi you are showing, if it's a female. There have been cases where a female is actually too aggressive for a male, that might be a reason why you haven't seen her holding. She needs to be "conquered" so to say. Provided it's a she.
