Yellow Labido

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i agree they work with tiger barbs. i had mine with a school of four before. nice color combo with the two as well

Ok, another question - what kind of food do you give to your lab? I have bought Tetra Cichlid Mini Granules and my lab is showing interest and desire to eat, it takes that little flake, holds for few secs in it's mouth and spits it out. Just saw that, so he doesn't like them, right? Maybe I should try some kind of worms?

Ok, sorry for misunderstanding, English isn't my native language. Asked just as precaution. I hope that he will eventually drop this habit. He's doing this just too often :D This was the only yellow lab at my LFS. How many could I add in my 20gal and keep them for life? And would this do any good? Is mine female? Just read, that if there is white coloration on anal fin, it's female. Is it right? I'd like to know how to seperate them, to get right gender.

First off, there is no 100% way to identify male or female unless you vent them. (get a jewelers loop and look at the reproductive organs) Yellow labs are monomorphic. Males and females look alike. What you ahve there is the white-bellied morph of these fish. They are just a different color variant than all yellow labs. Egg spots and white fins are not ways to identify them.

You could try feeding them New Life Spectrum. That is what I feed all of my cichlids. NLS is best when used as the only type of food. Do not feed your lab any high protein foods like worms. Mbuna are sensitive to getting bloat. They are normally herbivores in the wild. Feed them something with a high amount of sprulina.

I just don't know. Tried one more time feeding him with Tetra's flakes and now he ate them, spitted out a little bit, but generally ate it. Looks like my little fella has some character :) So what could I give him besides flakes?

Go with the New Life Spectrum foods. I love using it. Most people have better luck with pellets in lieu of flakes when dealing with africans. But that is not always true.

Keep in mind, sometimes they are just picky until they realize that is the only option.

Ok, I'll see if I have something of those. My fella is so lovely, he started a little digging under driftwood, in cave, which I made... Also gave him a very tiny piece of boiled shrimp, looked like he loved it. Just read that they eats shrimp.

I say starve him for about a day or two and he will learn to eat the flakes. It is also good for them to not be fed one day or two days a week to avoid bloat. The electric yellow that I have is very susceptible to bloat. Also, avoid floating pellets that caused me some problem. If you are going to use floating pellets soak them in water first before you give it to them. do you have standard 20g or 20L? you might be able to add more fish in there if it was a 20L since there are more surface areas.

Well I guess it's not long, 61 x 31 x 46 сm(LxWxH). As badisbadis101 and Bethany said, I'll probably try about 6 Tiger Barbs.
