Yellow Perch Growout Thread

Perch are great! I have four 6-7" fish in with a sunfish. They let the Sunny push them away from the front of the tank until feeding time...then they are lightning quick and grab the feeders before anything else! I love watching these guys!

Lol. I'm just keeping mine by themselves for now so it'll be cool to see how they adapt to my 75 in a few months. They're sure voracious feeders, mine stuff themselves with bloodworms in no time, can't wait until they're big enough to get feeders :)

They ARE voracious eaters! Within a few hours of stuffing themselves they are back at the front of the tank looking for more!

Perch are finally starting to grow! They're just shy of 2" now and the biggest one might be 2".

Well nevermind about growing. Took a ruler to the tank and the biggest is maybe 1.75" if that with most being around 1.5" still. I don't know why but they just will NOT grow! Any suggestions? They're in clean water about 72-74 F and being fed frozen brine shrimp and frozen bloodworms, won't take dry.

How often and how much are you changing the water? Some fish excrete a hormone that inhibits growth, I don't know how much this affects yellow perch, but since they are prone to stunting in small ponds my guess is that it is a factor.

I have a 5" yellow perch, it's a PITA to feed in the community tank, it is taking freeze dried krill off the surface now. I fed it some creek chubs, and then it started hunting food, after which it started accepting the krill off the surface.

33-50% WCs once a week. Only fish in their own 20 high growout. They're from Erie where perch get massive so genes shouldn't be an issue with size.

Update: Sad news, down to 2 Perch :(. The one jumped out this afternoon and I found it shortly ago dried up under the tank. Hoping to see a few more slip into my bait bucket this weekend to take home if I'm lucky :).

Guess I an lucky! On my way home with a 2" perch hat slipped into my bait bucket this morning :). Hope it acclimates pretty well. Also hope the two I have at home start growing soon because their lack of growth in clean water being fed well is getting annoying.

New perch acclimated well. At first it looked like it wouldn't make it but it pulled through. Probably because of the ph change from 8.5 in Erie to my tap which is 7.6. Quite a few differences from the other two I've had including slightly larger size, more vivid bars (the ones I've had have almost no bars left), yellow eyes, and a slightly higher back. Won't eat yet but hopefully it will by tonight. Pictures later!

Well that didn't last long. The new perch is swimming upside down at the top of the tank. I've been trying to revive him but he'll just swim all over spinning like a torpedo then float back to the top belly up. Don't know what I can do to help him if anything so I'm 99% sure I'm about to lose him. At least I still have the original pair in good health.
