Am I understanding this right? You catch Cichlas in Florida and then put them into other random lakes? Isn't that a crime? At least here in Austria setting non native fauna free is.

The Cichla were/are released by Florida fish & Wildlife, it's not a crime. Now other non natives, yes it's against the law.

Do you know the reason why F&W are setting them free and when they did that? Aren't they a serious threat to native fish, amphibian and reptile species?

If you are really that interested in why the state of Florida LEGALLY introduce a NONNATIVE species into its waters may I suggest.....GOOGLE :)

yeah... I could google this and anything I'd like to know, making this forum useless, thanks.

Of course I read Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peacock_bass) and stuff, but still can't believe that they introduced a top prdeator like Cichla to control other introduced fish when other fish like largemouth bass are native and also a threat to non native fish...

you are very welcome...figured you needed a little motivation :), can't expect everything to be to handed to you, you know.

you must not know FL waters very well...pbass is a great predator but it's nothing compared to the bowfins, gars, large catfish, snook (freshwater), tarpon (freshwater), large turtles (softshell and snappers), gators, and of course large mouth bass...all these natives are also PREDATORS...they do not just sit there and wait to be eaten by non-natives like pbass...

google or wikipedia the rabbit and fox model. then maybe you would understand why a non-native species like the pbass could coexist with natives...

while you are at it check out the latest snakehead report issued by florida fish and game. ANOTHER TOP PREDATOR that made headline and got ppl like some members on this forum...ah hem ;)...all bent out of shape. They did not even harm any of the native species population...in fact native species are feeding off their fry.

again, you are very welcome :)

Well put K. I can undersatand people jumping on non natives because the way some areas are affected, BUT South Florida is a different animal than what they know.
