Anyone have this problem? At first it appeared I only had one which was fine as "our co-existence" was fine but now I've counted up to 4 of them and when I go out near the pond they act upset and start flying around(including close to me). Most of the time they 'float' on the water.

They come by the dozens because they take the water to build their nests or drink as they drink a lot in summer.. I also get the bigger mud wasps who do the same but only happens during May to Sept.

They are easy enough to catch by net put it on ground and stomp on them.
They only travel so far from the nest and you have a nest either on your property or close enough. Destroy the nest they simply rebuild it near by because they stay near water source but kill them and problem solved.

I normally don't bother critters but I have been attacked and this yr killed about 20 in May and no problems at all this summer as far as any near the ponds.

Again easy enough to catch with large fish net because you can't use pesticides. Even a hose squirt sends them to the ground and you crush them.
If they aren't bothering you than great but here they sting (May to Sept )and I wont tolerate them after being stung 3 times in the head lol. .

I get oriental hornets:
http://www.muenster.org/hornissenschutz/oriental-hornet.htm
on my water fall and water lilies as they drink the water. Last year I killed about 200. I use a hose and drown them in the pond (underwater) so that they can't call for help and friends. Catching them with a net and stomping on them is not recommended. They have the ability to alerting their friends in the event they are stressed and you don't want them attacking in mass. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hornet
Hornets, like many social wasps, can mobilize the entire nest to sting in defense, which is highly dangerous to humans. The hornet alarm pheromone is used to raise alarm of nest attack and to identify prey, such as bees.[5] It is not advisable to kill a hornet anywhere near a nest, as the distress signal can trigger the entire nest to attack. Materials that come in contact with pheromone, such as clothes, skin, dead prey, or hornets, must be removed from the vicinity of the hornets nest. Perfumes and other volatile chemicals can be falsely identified as pheromone by the hornets and trigger an attack.

By killing them underwater, they die silently.

I have many honey bees and yellow jackets as well drinking but do not touch them since they don't bother me so I don't bother them. Hornets are far more aggressive so best be careful when dealing with them.

Yea, one time I sprayed a hornet's nest at my grandfathers's house but I wasn't quick enough, within 5 seconds one manage to sting me around my ribcage. I think it came up from behind as I saw nothing flying at me.

Spray only at night. And wear clothing so that almost no skin is exposed.

With what, I basically only see them around/on the pond. I'm sure the normal wasp spray is bad for the fish too.

Never, never, never on the pond. On the pond I drown them so they can't call for reinforcements.

well you could wait till dusk when they are all getting ready to go to sleep and go out there with a shop vac and suck them all up ;)
