You should be fine just keep up on the maintenance. I would definitely add the Pictus Cats, I have 4 of them in my 90 Severum tank and they are fun to watch.
Sure, he will fit in a three foot tank. He will also fit in a two foot tank. And a one foot.
Providing a larger aquarium will help with the fishes growth, the water quality, the aggression/tolerance to tank mates and the overall health of the fish.
Would you rather be locked in a bathroom or a double garage? Would you be more likely to argue with someone if you were stuck right next to them 24/7?
Not shooting anyone down, just putting in my opinion. Just as everyone else on here has.
comparing a 3x18 to a 4x18 is not the same as comparing a bathroom to a double garage lol

You obviously aren't grasping what I'm trying to say
Look, the majority of us on here have read the threads, we know about the nitrogen cycle, water changes; and aggression issues. If you're doing water changes then what I've just mentioned is a non-issue.
What it really boils down to, is looking at your tank with a big fish in it, and honestly asking yourself whether it looks content, or looks utterly bored. I imagine some people will probably say "its a fish, you can't tell, blah blah blah", in which case I'd say you're either in denial or not experienced enough to read a fish' behaviour patterns.
E.g fish that are too big for tanks, tend to hide, or mope in the one spot. Its that simple.
When you go ahead with your GT, if you're honest with yourself you'll be able to tell if the tank is big enough or not. I'm not saying 36x18 is or isn't big enough, I'd be prepared to upgrade though if it was me.
