I'm thinking about getting a silver or black arowana within the next few months, so I've been researching them for a while now. What I'd like to do is get a teeny tiny one and grow it up, but there are two factors that are keeping me from doing this right away. One, they require huge tanks as adults, and, two, in two to three years I'll be transferring to UCI. Now, I intend to take my fish with me, but I think a huge tank would be hard to move.

So, I thought about it, and I came up with a plan. Get a little baby aro, and grow it in my 55 until it's too big. I've read that they grow 1-1.5 inches a month on average when they're young, so I figure I can keep one in a 55 for roughly half a year. Then, I could move him up to around a 125 until I move out on my own and get a tank big enough for life. I have the resources and money to buy the second tank now, but I'd hate to shell out for the tank and have the fish die on me somehow, for whatever reason.

If I'm overlooking something or if I have my facts wrong I'm sure you'll tell me, but I'd appreciate any feedback. Could this work? How long would the 125 comfortably house him? Or is it a no go? I want to make sure I can properly care for this fish before I get it. =P

in 2-3 years a silver will be pushing 3 feed. it will very hard to transport him then.

my 120gallon, housed my 4" silver arowana till he was 18" ( that took about 5 months )

You can leave the arowana in the 120gallon i'd say till hes about 24" max than should move him to a bigger tank. He should do fine in the 55 for 3 months or so.

Shell out the cash for the big tank now. You're going to need/want it later no matter what.

Ok. New plan. Don't go to college.:grinno: Kidding. Guess I'll just put this on back burner for now and stick to my dumb blood parrots. I'm glad you set me straight so fast. A girl can dream, though, right?

you could always keep the arowana, than sell it or trade it for a smaller one once yours gets to big. but that would be hard to do :(

Well, I don't have one yet. Thankfully. I'd hate to ever hurt anything because I got it and then couldn't provide for it. We get fish under the pretense of caring for them, so that's what I try to do. Right now, I could buy a 125 setup but the 300+ gallons a silver could eventually need is way beyond my means right now. I couldn't bear to have to look at a cramped and miserable aro everyday. Thanks so much. You guys sure are fast!

well, some of us dont like x-mas. so will be on here alot or drinking some rumnogg :D. which I'm doing both.

An arowana can live happily for a little while longer in something 2ft wide. Your best bet would be to find something on www.craigslist.com for cheap. or look around in cali theres always deals.

I agree with Milkman...Look on CL and see what you can find... A 180 would be better but sometimes you can find some tanks that are still 24" wide but 4' long instead of 6'... Not perfect but would work for awhile..
