Neat! I kinda like your algae carpet. That would be a great setup to farm algae for hillstream loaches, tadpoles, etc.
Agreed. Inside a week, the carpet builds thick enough to lift the gravel off the bottom, I'm sure with larger river stones it'd work out even more nicely. Still using no ferts, soil base is working out well so far.

but, did you just say "Jack Dempseys" ... ? in a 10G tank ... ? what's the story there?
I did, and lol, not in the 10g. Growing them out to find a pair in a planted 55 that'll obviously get much larger when the time comes.

my cories would probably love that setup
Mine love the feeding schedule for the fry and the different plant areas. During the day they'll group under the sponge covered filter intake, if spooked they'll hide in the much thicker anacharis, and come forward when hungry. They get a tiny bit of food 5-6x a day, so the cories stack up at the bottom waiting for cleanup duty. The algea catches sinking food and holds it up out of the bottom for easy pickings.

Just pulled about 10' of anacharis out (to give you an idea of how thick it'll grow if allowed) and tossed it into a different tank.
2 quick shots - One to show how thick the Corkscrew gets at the top, the other a top down of an albino snagging dinner. Pita to get a shot of them darting around with a slow shutter on the cell phone. -_-
