Delivered this morning. Smaller than I expected - only 2 inches.

You think it's goliath? Notice the red bit on the lower jaw.

I'm a bit worried though, it's in with a 4 inch vampire tetra. How large a fish is a payara capable of eating? The vamp is no fatter than the tiger, but twice as long.

looks promising, hope you got the real one, but either way that is one great looking fish.. keep us updated with its grows ;)

I hope you have a real one!!!

I personally think at the size you have stated they will be fine for the time been how bigs the tank you have them in ?

As the Vampire Tetra's ( Sabretooth Tetra ) Maximum size: 30" though 12" more likely in captivity. And the goliath Tiger fish grows just over 48" so i don't think you would be able to keep both speices together very long.

Also you mentioned that you weren't sure if it was a true goliath well judging by your pic's can't really tell so i thought i'd post you a pic of a juviniles head and if it looks the same as this then you have a winner ok mate !

Hey Dan I think the wild caught record for these fish is around 4 ft for a payara (i've seen photos of them around that size) - and apparently 6 foot or so fora goliath tiger.

however, because the tiger is only 2 inches and slow growing I doubt it will ever become twice the size of the vampire tetra, so I imagine they'll be fine together.

But look- here is a comparison of both of them now. The vamp is 4 inches and the tiger is 2 inches. But as the tetra is so skinny, I doubt it could consume a fish half it;s size.

The size i mentioned was for the home aquarium not the wild sorry should have mentioned that ! Thats what i was thinking when i wrote the above post.

But looking at your tank and the size of both fish as long as they can't fit in each others mouths you shouldn't have any problems.

What made you buy the Goliath Tiger fish anyway if you don't mind me asking ? Because i know there not a very active fish and i thought you were setting up a catfish pool, You were setting up a catfish pool wern't you or have i got the wrong person ?

If its not too late already, I can guarantee that the payara can eat him in a heart beat. They have huge stretching jaws, I've seen payara eating similar sized payaras!

Sorry people, but no fish on this thread pictured is H. Goliath. The red on the jaws is not an indicator. The short snub face is typical of Vittatus and the other striped species, not Goliath. The Goliath has a longer face and jaws even at that small size.

DanDan, on the contrary, all ATFs are very active. Mine don't stop moving unless they are totally freaked out and then their movements are nervous and unpredictable.

Agree

I put the jaw redness down to the erratic nature of tigers. They freak out ALOT. Don't worry, a vittatus is still an awesome animal, and more than enough for the typical hobbyist.
Rumblesushi, glad he made it ok. Should receive my tigers on Thursday. Hope it doesn't snow.
He maybe small, but give it time. Tigers are a fantastic fish to own. tank looks good to!
