in it's your cam as the earlier person stated however I was told by the guy at my lfs a newly spooked fish does have an slightly more intense colore so before you start trying to net a fish (not you persay) take a good look at the coloring before it changes

i had some Dempseys over white sand and they where like tan color so 1 replaced the sand with black gravel and they darkend up.

i have pea gravel which probably gives my barred a lighter look.
big dovii - whom has my barred's brother lol has black sand, his fish is very dark.

i'd say gravel does.
