dont worry about waiting for them to pair up just put a male and a female together in a 10 gallon tank and they will breed and give them a rock good luck

55 should be fine...... I love the size my cons are right now, about 2 inches i think. Hard to tell in a bow front, makes everything look hugeeeeeeeee.
As for sexing the cons. Even as small as 1 inch you can tell. The female will have orange on the belly, and above the mouth towords the fin the male's head will have a slight hump and her head will be more sloped. I was at the LFS today and could sex all 12 in the tank and they were no bigger than 1 inch.

I heard some newbie bought two 1inch long convicts kept in 5gal "betta" tank and they got wigglers...weird breeding set tank for convicts. lol
It shocked me on how fast though. I put them in there and come back in an hour or so to check up on them and the female was laying eggs on one of the rocks. I guess I pulled them from the 30 gallon tank just in time.
I do need to setup 2 more 10 gallon tanks though. I have 4 left in the 30 gallon tank and they have already paired up.
ok i just checked on them again. looks like i have some wigglers. but heres the thing. The parents are either eating them or moving them somewheres. They will come up and take one in their mouth and then dissapear under a rock where they dug out the sand from under and then come back and get another. is this normal?
yes this is normal they are doing their parental dutys. they are known to be some of the best parents. keep it up. I am breeding cons as feeder and there are 4 pairs in a 30G tank. they each have chosen their corners. I was going to devide the tank but decided to see what happened if I didnt. I don't get the numbers I do from the 20G with 1 pair in it but the 30 is right beside the 150 so it looks better than if it was all devided up. its not the only food I feed the big boys but its probably about 1/2 their daily intake

Rule number 1 with Breeding Convicts... if you have a male and female... Just add water and they will breed... doesn't really matter how much water... just keep em covered and they are happy enough to be horny...
