Yet Another ID Thread - What Kind of Wolf Fish ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Juvenile black wolves still don't look like this but it's a mala. It probably got banged up on the trip to the lfs or in the tank it's in now.

It will grow back. Can't tell but I think it's small and needs to be fed and it'll look better.
Do you have a picture of a juvenile black that I can keep in my wallet when I go to the fish store?

Lol...right next to my wifes pic. I'll see if i can post one.

It's a mala unless proven otherwise. Probably from bumping or running into the tank. Or whatever it was being transferred/shipped in.
+1 I agree with everything kno4te is saying. It's easy once you see enough and if you go on google you can see a difference, malas will be more of a grey and black while blacks will be tan and black as young ones. But of course patterns and color can vary and change

Now how in the heck can I tell the difference? To my untrained eye they look the same.
Just keep looking, looking, and looking. Guessing and guessing. You'll figure it out.

They are different. You'll eventually see. The one I posted is lighter than usually seen.

Let me find a typical darker version and then maybe a black.

Darker.

Can see the variations in color. The so called "darker" has a nice golden color to as opposed to brown and is sold as a choco sp.

Typical curu that most find and buy.
