Have you tested your water?
Yes
If yes, what is your ammonia?
Low, I can't remember the exact values
If yes, what is your nitrite?
Negligible
If yes, what is your nitrate?
Negligible
If I did not test my water...
  1. ...I recognize that I will likely be asked to do a test, and that water tests are critical for solving freshwater health problems.
Do you do water changes?
Yes
What percentage of water do you change?
31-40%
How frequently do you change your water?
Every week
If I do not change my water...

So I had a case of fish with their mouths rotting a couple of weeks ago. I did a course of Kanaplex and everyone seemed fine. I did a water change after the treatment on Tuesday last week. I checked parameters yesterday and there was a bit of an ammonia spike so I did a change yesterday. I also noticed that the mouth rot seems to have reappeared and I have what looks like ich. I haven't lost any fish at all this week nor have I added any new ones in quite some time. I'm curious, can you mix Super Ick Cure and Kanaplex. I also bought some Metroplex today because I wanted to be prepared. Or do you think I should do something else. I checked water parameters yesterday and the nitrates and nitrites are negligible so that's a plus I guess.

Are their mouths fixed open or are the fish gasping? Hard to tell from still images.
Fish will gasp w ammonia poisoning. If you have or can get seachem prime quickly I would do so and dose for the ammonia poisoning, which is 5x the declination dose. This converts harmful ammonia to harmless ammonium for 24 hours till your bio filter can remove it.
Add 1tbsp salt per 5gal to prevent nitrite poisoning. A nitrite spike almost always follows a nitrate spike of the bio filter has been compromised.
As to the medication question, I cannot answer.
All the best 🙏🏼

Their mouths are fixed open. None of them are gasping and everyone is swimming around normally although the two serpaes have been hiding. I have seachem and have used it. As I mentioned, the nitrates and nitrites are at healthy levels. It's white on the test strips. Does any of this look like ich? I can try to get some more clear pictures if needed.

What are you trying to treat? You could even mix all 3 medicines: malachite green, Kanaplex, and metronidazole but that would be quite a load on their kidneys and liver. So, you should have a good reason to use that combo.

Also, the formulation in Super Ick Cure is harsher than Hikari Ich X or Ridich Plus. I personally wouldn’t mix Super Ick Cure but would use the others.

I can’t see the ick but that issue with their mouths could be columnaris. You’d want to treat that with nitrofurazone and Kanaplex combo.

Read up on columnaris and see if your fishes symptoms match up

Reactions: danotaylor
If the mouth is fixed open, it could be Columnaris.
Which is a gram negative bacterial infection, that can live, inert in a dry smudge of sand for years and reinfect when water is again added,

Because my experience with it was so bad,
I tore down the tank, euthanized all fish in it,
filled te tank with a strong bleach solution (left the tank sit filled with bleach for a week) put everything that touched the water (nets, tubing, heaters tank tops, etc etc) into that bleach solution,
anything that didn't fit, and touched the water was tossed including all media, and started the tank from scratch.
