I've been reading through the Arowana forum long before I got mine, and always laughed when people would say they jump out of the tank. But you guys really were not kidding, huh? I'm doing a 30% WC yesterday and I open the lid, put the siphon in, and immediately closed the lid. I sit in the chair and watch the bucket fill up, lift the lid, kill the siphon, close the lid and go dump the water. As I walk back in, lift the lid, it's almost like he's waiting there for me to open it again, because sure enough he comes shooting out about 8 feet from the tank, across the room. He landed on carpet, and I ran over and scooped him up gently and dropped him back in the tank. I thought to myself...what are the chances??!!
Today, I watch him swim to the left side of the tank, so I quickly open the right side to drop in some Aro sticks, again sure enough he comes shooting out, this time he hits me in the chest, and I drop the bag of Aro sticks so I can pull up my shirt to catch him in my shirt. Caught him and got him back in quickly. Then I spent 20 minutes cleaning up the floor. Is this something I should be trying to work with, like Shamu?? Twice in two days.....:nilly:

put something heavy on your tank cover :D

the problem with a heavy tank cover is that if your arow is a "jumpy" one, it might jump and hurt itself with a heavy tank cover. With that amount of power into the heavy lid, it will injure its back, and this may lead to death. i have seen many threads about their arow jumping and injuring themselves because of heavy lids. On the other hand though, with out a lid is equally dangerous (maybe even more dangerous). would a netlike hood work? i dont know just a suggestion.

You can put a wad of filter floss or pond filter material on the underside of the hood to soften it.

how big is the tank?

I have two silvers together and one is very jumpy.. the other is not so jumpy at all..

Its been awhile since either of the two jump out.. but the key is def a strong lid/cover.. and a tank big enough so that they will swim away from you when u do water change..

Also.. its also good if ur arowana knows who u are.. Mine are more calm than before because i sometimes hand feed them.. and although i ave been bitten a few times.. the two silvers know who I am and wont freak out ....

However this doesnt apply when i'm wearing either a Royal Blue shirt or a Gold/yellow shirt... Boy both of my fish will freak out.. theres something about those two colors they dont like... :irked:

I use plastic lids as they flex, unlike glass, when the fish hits them.

That sucks, my RTG jumped out while I was away and it was to late when I discovered him. The tank was completely covered, he just hit the glass just right that it lifted and directed him out of the tank. Strange thing is he wasnt a jumpy fish... guess I'll never know what happened.
Kinda at a loss for ideas, maybe a larger tank that would allow some room between the water surface and the lid so they dont just slam into the lid if they do jump
