Why so many people recommends Ball Pythons as beginner snakes if most of the beginners are not experienced enough to deal with the nature of Ball Pythons? Is it because it is cheap?

I was thinking about this while I ran into many caresheets recommending anoles, iguanas and so on as beginner lizards. I find that anoles are not beginner pets, but rather "disposable" pets under the mindset of many people if you pardon the choice of word.

I know cornsnakes are excellent beginners, I never had problem with them.

because every thinks balls are easy to care for because lfs tell them that and they tell a friend..when balls can sometimes go months wihtout eating, and can be tempermental at times...i aggree cornsnakes or milks..are the way to go for beginers

I think if the BP is captive-bred and has an established and good feeding history, its a fine beginner snake. I don't think they're anymore variable in temperment than corns or milks, but that's just me.

I don't think the random "fasting" periods are a big deal as long as the owner is aware that it does sometimes happen.

I coudn't agree more......also a king or corn might not be as hard feeding wise but they are also a faster snake and can be more nippy at times then a ball.........

The most common reason ball pythons go off feed in captivity is because of husbandry errors. Beginners don't take proper care of them for whatever reason, and they go off feed.

Young ball pythons (under 1000 grams) should not go off food for any reason. They are growing more in this time of their lives than any other and when properly cared for, are ravenous feeders. Adult balls however, do fast for periods of time.

You guys have to admit though that many people suggest Ball Pythons without warning the beginners or novices about their fastings.

I know I wouldn't be able to stand it if my snake fast on me.

I have no intention of breeding them. They just kinda fall into my lap because the original owners didn't want them anymore. They are fun as hell and dog-tame too. Probably my favorite lizard species after the Blue-Tongued Skink. That is saying something since I am not a fan of most lizard species. If I got room, I would have a colony of Ackies. Alas, I am being forced to downsize my collection even further; I am just trying to figure out what to do with the Anoles since I don't have a smaller enclosure for them yet. The Ackies are not going anywhere, I know that for sure.

PM me for more details, I don't wanna derail the thread.

I think Royal Pythons make great pets but they live very long...
