You might not believe fish can be happy...

I know exactly what you are talking about with the betta showing joy! I set up a 10 gal planted tank (years ago) that I kept one male betta and 4 or 5 females. With each fish I bought and introduced to the tank, the sheer joy they exhibited was unmistakable. The girls established a pecking order... the male set up nesting in a quiet corner, and, all got along very well.

That's lovely, I've always felt they should be given the space to swim! Thinking of getting one for myself in a few months in my 21litre tank. They are so peaceful to watch!

Biologically speaking, bettas come from rather confined and ****ted up water. Some individuals are happier if the water quality isn't pristine and some get stressed if they have too much free space. I've personally had one that stressed out like crazy in a 30 gallon, moved him to a 2.5 gallon and he was happy as a pig in mud.

Agree! Gave one the space of 72G tank with some tetra community fish. It got stressed and jumped out within a week!
