i purchased three Geophagus sp. "bahia red" about two weeks ago. the biggest is about 3.5" (male) and the other two are females at 3". when i checked this morning, the two females were mouth wrestling and the male is just looking on and waiting who'd win to be his partner. i think i might have a spawn sooner or later. the only problem is that they are all siblings.:irked:
i have searched for more infos regarding this species but there's not much around. are there others here who have experiences with this species? do you have full sized/mature pics of your fish (i have seen the Rapps specimen, thanks)? maximum size? i need further info (esp regarding whether they are distinct from Geophagus brasiliensis). TIA

You can treat them the same. It is unclear if it is a separate species, or just a variant of brasiliensis.....

:iagree:

The 'bahia red' will have a more sloped head and pointed mouth and 'brasiliensis' a more blunt nuchal hump. That is really the only known difference between the two. Of coarse the 'bahia red' being more brightly colored and the latter being more faded, in most cases.

Both will reach 8 to 10 inches as adults

well, i lost the extra female. the other two have paired up and proceeded to liquidate the third fish (wasn't able to interfere) and are staying in one corner of the tank. i really couldnt tell if there were eggs, but im not really counting on any fry survivng cos they are in a grow out tank with other fish...
