I got 2 gold sevs, planning to just keep ONE (and get other colors). they are 'maybe' 3 1/2 inches, I thought they were fighting lip locks yesterday. but they have eggs on slate rock in comm tank.
isn't this kind of young?

sexually mature @ 3-4". theyre very young, this is uncommon but still has a possibility. dont expect fry, young parents are terribl are fry rearing. once theyre old and experinced theyll get it.

they'll probably pull it off, just because I was only planning to keep one ;-)
Now I won't feel good about breaking them up. Lol.

Size and age are two different things. Do you know how old they were when you got them? Most females don't spawn until they're at least six months old, but I'd guess if you have a fertile male then he's at least a year old. It sounds to me like they're behind in growth.

don't know age. they are from a fish store with a good rep referral from mfker. the tanks are well kept, not crowded. there were quite a few of the same bunch in a generous tank. These 2 have visibly grown here, though I've just had them a short time. I'm eyeballing their size.
Of course I don't know if the male is fertile. There's a BGK in there, which could get the eggs tonight or ...?. he is very bold. we got him from the same store. he has grown like a weed & is vigorous.

Ryan, hard for me to tell accurate length bcuz they won't stay at the acrylic & it's a 6 ft tank. I'd have to net one to measure.
If eggs get eaten or fungus I'll try.
what is normal range of length for 6 mo gold female? I doubt she could be more than, say.. one more inch.
do I measure from nose to end of tail?

4 - 5" probably wouldn't be too uncommon for a spawning female. Most females are going to top out around 6 - 8" anyway in domestic strains. Do either have facial striping? Maybe it's two females.

My H. severus pair from Rapps were about 4" when I got them and were already spawning and producing fry. They continued to grow, but only to about 8" or so. This sounds nice but my other pair of Atabapos dwarf them. The male and female are both about 10 - 11" and thick. So I do think the severus were a bit behind in growth and didn't reach their maximum potential.

I can have severum jveniles to 3" in three months but that's with ideal conditions (large daily water changes and multiple feedings). I don't expect most LFS fish to get that kind of treatment. I'm betting they're older than you think they are. That doesn't mean they won't still grow or that they won't be nice fish, it just tends to be the case with cichlids once they hit a wholesaler/LFS/distributor.

yes the one whose vent stayed small & pointy thru this has facial markings & seems male. the one with female tube was the aggressor before now, I thought she was male. she has just barely fuller body shape & mostly does egg fanning care. the other pushes tankmates away more.

My 8 inch sev bred with my 3 female lol
