Ignore the first part of the video, about halfway through I show my bichir. He tries to dig down into the sand, but it's usually too heavy for him to get far under it. A few times I have walked into the room to see him 75% covered in sand though.

Is that normal? How does he breathe when his entire head is burried? Just wanna make sure this is a normal practice with bichirs, as I would be really bummed if he died over something stupid like this.

it's normal. mostly endlis tend do this but i've seen my dels do the same from time to time also.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Mostly my gf asked last night, "How does he breathe if there's sand over his gils?". To which I replied, "I have no clue...".

So I wanted to make sure all is well, essentially I'm paranoid. :screwy::cry:

Well, Bichirs breath like we do. They come up for air and take a gulp to go back down for a few minutes.

In my big tank P.delhezi and my dwarf snakehead are doing this ... the dwarf rests about one hour without breathing air!

Yea, a few times I've stuck my hand in and moved him to see if he was dead or not. I've seen him sit in the sand in the same spot without moving for a couple hours. :irked:

my lapradei will occasionally bury everything but his tail under the sand

yeah, seen them do it a lot in sand. Would say might be because of how your jar was acting when feeding, but I've seen them do it "for no reason", not saying that it isn't for added security though. Nice looking tank.

i've seen a few of mine do this, but in my case when they're startled by me during water changes.
